Lighthouse of God

When we talk about being a lighthouse, we instinctively think it's about us shining our light into the world. Amen to that but allow me to dig a little more on some interesting facts about a lighthouse.

  • A lighthouse is usually located at an important or dangerous place.

  • The two main purposes of a lighthouse are to serve as a navigational aid and warn boats of dangerous areas.

  • Lighthouse symbolizes "a guiding light to a correct path in life", "salvation and safety especially in the face of adversity", "overcoming challenges and adversity".

  • A beacon (lighthouse) is light or fire, usually on a hill or tower, that acts as a signal or warning.

A lighthouse is usually located at an important or dangerous place.

"You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."Matthew 5:14-16

I always thought that being a  light on the hill meant that I would be in a high position in life and I would be able to influence people, but that's not what it actually means. When God said you are the light of the world, this is what He meant.

Like a lighthouse, we usually find ourselves in important or dangerous places or times. Once in a while we will be caught up in difficult situations, circumstances, crises, adversity, war, sickness, sin, etc. A lighthouse isn't placed in the midst of the city, full of lights. Nor is it placed in a luxurious place but in a places where it's needed the most, that means important and dangerous places.

Our main purpose on earth is to serve - serve God and people. One of the ways we serve is as a navigational aid to those who are already in Christ and need some guidance, encouragement, love, and sometimes just our company; to display how to be Godly every minute of our lives. Another purpose is to warn those that haven't accepted Christ yet or those who have and yet continue to live a sinful and purposeless life.

One of the ways we serve is as a navigational aid to those who are already in Christ

As the word says we are to guide and lead those around us to God that they may glorify Him. They can glorify Him only when we project Him. You and I are beacons of God to the world. In a way we are all in the eyes of everyone around us, everyone takes notice of you, there are kids who are following you, elders who are questioning you, peers who are judging you, how are you living? What are you preaching with the way you live, speak and interact?

It also says "It gives light to everyone in the house". We know the value of light in darkness. It is in darkness that we are most vulnerable to fall, hurt ourselves, hurt others, and are unable to do anything. We misjudge where we are, where others around us are, and what's around us so we stay still. Darkness can in a way paralyze us. In a similar way, the world is in utter darkness while we are living, walking, talking lights who are supposed to light up the world with truth in the midst of the lies of darkness.

You are a lighthouse, placed in the place you are purposed and called to be a beacon.
